Transferring a domain to Shopify means that all of the domain management will be handled by Shopify. So all of your payments, renewals, and domain settings are handled directly through your Shopify administrative settings.
In order to transfer your domain to Shopify, the current domain registration must be at least 60 days old. You also need access to your account with the original domain provider.
During the transfer process, you must actively monitor your email for important confirmations. The full transfer process can take up to 20 days.
All Shopify domain registrations are for a full year. For example, if you have 6 months left until your domain expires before you transfer it to Shopify, you will not renew your domain for 18 months after the transfer.
Note: Always review the transfer policy from your original domain provider before you get started.
To transfer your domain to Shopify, follow the steps below:
Step #1: Log in to your current domain provider account and unlock your domain in the settings. Find an option that enables you to transfer the domain. Exact wording and steps will vary based on your provider.
Step #2: Go to the “Domains” section of your “Online Store” sales channel in the Shopify admin.
Step #3: Click “Transfer Domain.”
Step #4: Enter the domain name that you want to transfer.
If you see “Domain Unlocked” next to the name, then it’s ready for transfer. If you see “Domain Locked” then go back to the first step to make sure you’ve properly prepared to transfer your domain.
Step #5: Enter the verification code that you received from your domain provider.
Step #6: Buy, confirm, and approve the transfer.
Alternative Option: If you are connecting a domain to your Shopify store for the first time, click “Connect Existing Domain” instead of “Transfer Domain” in Step #3. (This button is directly next to the “transfer domain” button).
From this page, you’ll see an option that says “Transfer in Your Domain.” Follow the same steps above from here.
